Community guide · Montgomery County
A wooded Lower Merion community of larger lots along the Schuylkill River, with a small village center.

Gladwyne is a community in the northern part of Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, bordering the Schuylkill River. It has a small village center with a library, post office and a few shops, and is otherwise residential.
Unlike most Main Line towns, Gladwyne has no train station of its own, so most residents drive. I-76 has an interchange at Gladwyne, and Bryn Mawr, Ardmore and Conshohocken are nearby for shopping and rail.
Mostly single-family homes on larger, often hilly and wooded lots: historic farmhouses and estates, mid-century houses, and newer custom homes, including some built where older houses were taken down.
Gladwyne grew around a 19th-century crossroads village, once called Merion Square, near the mills on Mill Creek. The village center is on the National Register as the Gladwyne Historic District, and the Mill Creek Historic District preserves stone mill-era houses along the creek. Much of the rest of Gladwyne developed as country estates and, later, houses on large suburban lots.
Larger, hilly lots bring their own due diligence.
There are few large tracts left, so new homes here are usually custom houses on existing lots or small subdivisions. If you are considering a teardown or major addition, confirm zoning, slope and tree rules with the township before you commit.
